This collection contains the papers, 1861-1936, of Hunter Holmes McGuire of Richmond, Va. The materials include correspondence, 1861-1932, concerning the Battle of 1st Bull Run, postwar requests for information on the Army of Northern Virginia in general, and letters recommending McGuire for a position in the Richmond Medical College (now the Medical College of Virginia). Other items in the collection include a speech, 1893, McGuire presented to the American Medical Association, and miscellaneous essays and speeches, 1936, on McGuire's life. Correspondents include Jubal Anderson Early (1816-1894), George Francis Robert Henderson (1854-1903), Mary Anna Jackson (1831-1915), and Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870).

The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America's Eastern Theater.
