This collection contains the papers, 1861-1936, of Hunter Holmes McGuire of Richmond, Va. The materials include correspondence, 1861-1932, concerning the Battle of 1st Bull Run, postwar requests for information on the Army of Northern Virginia in general, and letters recommending McGuire for a position in the Richmond Medical College (now the Medical College of Virginia). Other items in the collection include a speech, 1893, McGuire presented to the American Medical Association, and miscellaneous essays and speeches, 1936, on McGuire's life. Correspondents include Jubal Anderson Early (1816-1894), George Francis Robert Henderson (1854-1903), Mary Anna Jackson (1831-1915), and Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870).

Robert Edward Lee (1807-1870) served as General of the Confederate Army in the U.S. Civil War and was president of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia from 1865 to 1870. The Army of Northern Virginia was the primary military force of the Confederate States of America's Eastern Theater.
